Fresher’s Week is an excellent opportunity for students to get to know their new home and their new friends. Students are usually concerned regarding how much money will be spent during this period.

Fresher’s Week

 Fresher’s Week is a weeklong event also known as an orientation organized for the students in the first year of university. This takes place before the academic year commences. 

Since the university is quite different from school and college life, it gives students new exposure and independence that they have not experienced earlier.

 To give them time to settle in their lives, a fresher’s week is planned and celebrated so that the students get time to know and understand one another. This also includes parties, concerts, and tours so students can spend time with one another and know each other better. 

Students are expected to wear fancy dresses and make the best of their time. Moreover, a Fair is also arranged, which encourages and motivates first-year students to participate in the clubs and societies at the university.

When is Fresher’s Week Celebrated at Universities?

 Fresher’s Week is organized mid or at the end of September. However, this is not the case in Scotland. In Scotland, Fresher’s Week is celebrated for two months. It thus starts a bit earlier in September, as reported by Tiffany George, an event organizer for postal worker jobs.

Budget for Fresher’s Week

Since you might be in the habit of paying for yourself during Fresher’s Week, things could be different, as you have to pay for so many things simultaneously – your groceries, textbooks, and relevant stationery. On top of that, you will be paying for other essential things; thus, keeping track of your budget will be hard!

ShoppingFirst and foremost, count your total income and then do the budgeting accordingly. This will include savings, loans, and other necessities. After that, the rest of the money could be put aside for Fresher’s Week.

Set Priorities

Because there are so many things offered during Fresher’s Week, you will have to decide wisely what things you can choose. 

While there are some significant events, some are extra and can be left out. You can make a list putting each event in terms of its priority and crafting a list of significant events that you wish to participate in and trade it off for the less important r exciting ones. At any given time, if you feel that you are going overboard, you can strike out your most minor favorite activity without disturbing your budget. 

Set Aside Your Savings

Look at the things you can cut down, which will not affect you much. For example, spending extravagantly on food and clothing can be avoided to put aside some savings for later use. 

Moreover, you can search to see if discounts or super-saving promotions are available. Usually, there are special discounts for students which can be availed to help you in saving.

Eating Out

Though you might try your best to save money for later use, there will be times when you do not feel like compromising. For example, if your mates were ordering a Domino’s pizza with some extra cheese, then most probably, you would not want to wait for your lasagne to bake in the oven. 

Hence keeping extra cash will do you good and allow you to eat out when hunger strikes. 

Alternatively, if all of your flatmates agree, you can do the grocery shopping and divide the budget equally among yourselves. This way, when you are cooking together, you will get an excellent chance to know each other better and settle quickly.

Fresher’s Week should not leave you broke at the end. The best part is to find a balance between spending your best time and, side by side, saving a reasonable amount for your future expenses. 

If you spend everything without giving it a second thought, you might soon land on a big problem. So it is better to be safe than sorry.

Fresher’s Week and the Pandemic

Due to Covid-19, Fresher’s Week could not be celebrated in 2020, and thus it was organized online due to the lockdown and restrictions. However, since things have changed for the good, Fresher’s Week will now be happening in person, and gatherings on a large scale will take place. 

It is important to note that even if restrictions are not there, one should be careful to avoid damaging your health. Therefore, precautions are necessary for the sake of your health. 

Try to stay and socialize in open places and avoid crowded areas which do not have good ventilation. Make it a habit to wear your cloth mask at all times to enjoy and take care of your health too. 

Also, avoid sharing utensils and use a separate one for yourself. These include not sharing your water bottle, not eating on the same plate, and avoiding using the same glasses.

Carry a pocket-sized hand sanitizer wherever you go. Make sure not to touch your eyes, nose, or face without washing your hands properly. Avoid unnecessary going out and keep a check on your health for Covid-19 symptoms.
