The Northern Areas

Gilgit Baltistan
This northern province is home to soaring mountains, canyons, glaciers and lakes. Its largest city and capital is Gilgit, though it has more people living within its borders than any other Pakistani city. If you’re interested in visiting a place that feels very different from much of the rest of the country, then head north. The climate is harsh—the region gets less rain than almost anywhere else in Pakistan—but there are some fascinating things to see and do here.
The Hunza Valley, for example, offers trekking opportunities through steep mountain passes, while Naltar Lake attracts visitors with its trout fishing and scenic views. And if you really want to get off-the-beaten path, try heading up into Burzil Pass or down into Deosai National Park.

FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas)

The Western Provinces
The first place any traveler would like to visit is Lahore, not just because it’s home to most of Pakistan’s population but also because of its rich history and culture. The Mughal Gardens are a big draw, as are monuments such as Shalimar Gardens and Rohtas Fort. If you’re looking for more modern activities, head to its hip cafes, bars and restaurants. Another popular destination is Peshawar, where you can see ancient Buddhist sites as well as enjoy an evening out at one of its many pubs and clubs.
Those who want to see some wildlife should head to Chitral, which has been called the last bastion of natural beauty by some travel writers. Orchards and high mountain lakes await here. Finally, there’s Karachi, with a bustling downtown area known for its art galleries and museums.
