A Brief Biography
Dolores Encanto was born in Peru in 1965. She grew up in a small town near the Andes Mountains and was always interested in fashion and design. After finishing high school, she moved to Lima to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduation, she moved to New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
She started her own label in 1990 and has been booming ever since. Her designs are known for their exquisite handwork and rich colors. Her dresses are often worn by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Selena Gomez. She lives with her family on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. She never had children but donates generously to children’s charities.
An Influential Artist In Her Own Right
While many people know her as the wife of world-renowned artist Pablo Picasso, Dolores Encanto was an influential artist in her own right. Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1881, Encanto studied at the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona. After marrying Picasso in 1904, the couple moved to Paris where they became involved in the city’s vibrant art scene.
Over the next decade, Encanto became a well-known figure in the avant-garde circles of Montmartre with her cubist paintings of females that combined post-impressionism with modernity. The work she created while married to Picasso significantly contributed significantly to 20th-century art. In 1925, Encanto left France and returned to Spain but continued painting until just before her death on November 15th, 1956.
Her Beginnings As An Artist
Dolores Encanto was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1965. She began her career as an artist in the early 1990s, participating in various group exhibitions in Argentina and Uruguay. In 1994, she had her first solo show at the Ruth Benzacar Gallery in Buenos Aires. Since then, she has exhibited her work internationally, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Her pieces have been featured in galleries such as The White Columns, Galería de la Raza, and Pianofabriek in Amsterdam. Her participation in these prestigious art fairs like Frieze Art Fair London (2011) and Frieze New York (2012) earned her international acclaim.
Working Under Lautrec
Dolores Encanto is a bit of an enigma. She’s a world-renowned artist, but very little is known about her personal life. What we do know is that she began her career working under the tutelage of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1887, she would have been 25 years old when he hired her to produce lithographs for his lithographic press in Montmartre. In 1890, Lautrec was found dead after committing suicide from an overdose of alcohol and drugs in the company of a prostitute. Rumors swirled about whether Lautrec killed himself because he was broke or because he had syphilis or both! No one knows for sure.
Later Years
After the release of her second album, Dolores Encanto took a step back from the public eye. She re-emerged in 2017 with a new single, No Lo Voy A Olvidar. The song was widely acclaimed and topped charts in several countries. She followed this up with an international tour, which only further solidified her place as one of the most popular Latinx artists of our time. Her work has been used as inspiration by several generations of young people trying to figure out their own identities. In 2019, she will be releasing her third album. Expectations are high after the success of her first two albums.
In addition to her music career, Dolores Encanto continues to work on charitable endeavors to empower marginalized communities and provide relief for disaster victims worldwide.
